Steve Smith, MS CAE FAAMSE, Interim Executive Director

Steve has been an association executive and leader at various medical specialty and voluntary health associations for the past 30 years. Prior to his current role, CEO of Association Management Center, he served as a vice president of client relations on AMC’s Leadership Team and as CEO for the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). In his role with AAHPM, Steve led a team of professionals who helped the Academy achieve more than a decade of unprecedented growth and development. Prior to joining AMC Steve served in senior leadership roles at the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR) and at the national office of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Steve has a track record of creating high performing boards and assisting other CEOs and Executive Directors in efforts to elevate engagement and collaboration between senior staff and volunteer leadership. This includes strategies that draw upon generative thinking, strategic prioritization, and strengthening trust, communication, knowledge and understanding among internal and external constituents.

Active in the Association community, Steve is a frequent speaker, writer, and has served in numerous volunteer leadership roles with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), AMC Institute (AMCI), Association Forum of Chicagoland, and American Association of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE). He is past president of AAMSE and co-chaired their Diversity Advisory Group, he is past chair of Association Forum’s Welcoming Environments Committee and currently serves on the AMCI program planning committee. He also participates in CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, a coalition of over 2,000 CEOs who are dedicated to creating inclusive organizations and collaborating on leading practices. Steve is co-creator and co-host of Conversations by Association Podcast, providing insider tips and best practices to help professionals develop and advance association careers.


Tim Brennan, MD MPHVice President for Medical and Academic Affairs

Dr. Brennan is passionate about expanding high-quality and financially sustainable academic addiction medicine fellowship training around the United States. He works with emerging and established fellowship programs from inception to accreditation. Additionally, Dr. Brennan is the Director of the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospitals and the Program Director of the Fellowship in Addiction Medicine Program at the Icahn School of Medicine Mount Sinai in New York City. Dr. Brennan has spoken at state, national and international levels about addiction policy issues, particularly as related to young adults. He is the co-editor of Lippincott’s Essentials of Addiction Medicine and was appointed by Governor Cuomo to serve on the Medical Review Board at the New York State Justice Center.

Dr. Brennan is Board Certified in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and Board Certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.


Dawn LevreauDirector of Operations, Programs, and Products

For more than 30 years Dawn has worked exclusively with physician membership organizations, serving primarily in roles specific to academic medicine. Immediately prior to joining ACAAM Dawn served as the Director of Workforce and Career Development for the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), responsible for planning, implementation, and evaluation associated with workforce initiatives, HPM career development experiences, and academic resources and initiatives. Before AAHPM Dawn served in senior leadership roles at the Association for Academic Psychiatry and American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Since joining ACAAM, she has developed, implemented, and enhanced educational programs and products, created the infrastructures for the education portal and online member community, guided addiction medicine into the NRMP Medicine and Pediatric Specialties Match, and provided oversight for day-to-day operations, as well as short- and long-term planning.
